Thou beetle-browed, bacon-fed knave!

There is no shortage of medieval insult generators. Most of them draw on the same three columns of Shakespearean words — a teacher's classroom handout that has been circulating since 1994. This one was built the other way round: from the dictionaries and from the plays themselves.

FOUR SEPARATE CORPORA

Middle Ages and Renaissance, French and English, kept strictly apart — because they are not the same language.

272 words, 146 of them dated, drawn from 81 works and three reference dictionaries: the TLFi (ATILF, CNRS and Université de Lorraine), the Middle English Dictionary (University of Michigan) and the Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary (Univerzita Karlova, Prague). Chaucer, Piers Plowman, four plays of Shakespeare with act and scene, the Chanson de Roland, Chrétien de Troyes, Froissart, the quarrel of the bakers in Rabelais's Gargantua, Molière. AND WHAT IS NOT ATTESTED IS SAID SO

The words are of their period; the sentence patterns that frame them are modern constructions in the manner of the register, not quotations. Six words were thrown out during the build because they turned out to be first attested far too late — bedonnant dates from 1865 and has no business in a Renaissance corpus.

Des générateurs d'insultes médiévales, il y en a beaucoup. La plupart reprennent les mêmes trois colonnes de mots shakespeariens, tirées d'une fiche scolaire qui circule depuis 1994. Celui-ci a été construit dans l'autre sens : à partir des dictionnaires et du texte des œuvres.

Moyen Âge et Renaissance, en français et en anglais. Ils ne se mélangent jamais, parce que ce ne sont pas les mêmes langues.

CHAQUE MOT EST GLOSÉ, DATÉ ET SOURCÉ

Le bouton Gloser donne le sens de chaque mot rare, son siècle de première attestation et l'œuvre où il figure. 272 mots, dont 146 datés, tirés de 81 œuvres et de trois dictionnaires de référence : le TLFi de l'ATILF (CNRS), le Middle English Dictionary du Michigan et le Bosworth-Toller.

ET CE QUI N'EST PAS ATTESTÉ EST SIGNALÉ COMME TEL

Les mots sont d'époque ; les tournures qui les enchâssent sont des constructions modernes dans le goût du registre, et non des citations. Six mots ont été écartés en cours de route parce qu'ils étaient attestés bien trop tard : bedonnant date de 1865 et n'a rien à faire dans un corpus Renaissance.
